This Friday, Facebook has started rolling out its exclusive “News Tab”. Professionals will produce the content in the news tab, it is a brand new way of social media to promote journalism, and this will exuviate the reputation of Facebook as a rostrum for misinformation.
Facebook will depend on algorithmic “personalization” and also on human curation to provide the article of news from the partner news organizations. The “News Tab” will not be the regular feed tab. Instead, it is separated from the regular feed.
The new tab “gives people more control over the stories they see, and the ability to explore a wider range of their news interests, directly within the Facebook app,” said a Facebook statement.
“We talked to news organizations about what they’d like to see included in a news tab, how their stories should be presented, and what analytics to provide,” stated by the vice president of Facebook for the news collaboration with Campbell Brown and Mona Sarantakos (Product Manager).
Prior in this week, Zukerberg indicated to a “big announcement” on journalism and news, pointing to the new feature that will spotlight “high-quality news, not just social content”.
Facebook has collaborated with twenty daily news organizations – Washington Post, CBS News, the Boston Globe, Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, BuzzFeed, Bloomberg and Vanity Fair.
Facebook stated that it would roll out an initial test that would “showcase local original reporting by surfacing local publications from the largest major metro areas across the country, beginning with New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia, Houston, Washington DC, Miami, Atlanta, and Boston.”
